Monday December 24th 2012 (Christmas Eve)
Awoke to a cool overcast morning to see our approach into Wellington Harbour. Looks like it has been raining during the night, not that we heard anything. Just passed the Inter-island ferry from Wellington to Picton. We have just docked & I have a reasonable reception on my IPhone so will upload yesterday's blog whilst I can.
I intend to make my Christmas phone calls to my family today (just must remember the 2 hour time difference) as we will be cruising the Marlborough Sounds on Christmas Day, then heading out to sea for 36hrs, so I doubt we will have mobile service until the morning of the 27th. We had no service the day we cruised Milford Sounds so I won't take any chances. We leave Wellington tonight at 6pm NZ time so have all day to make the calls. That is of course if my NZ SIM does what they promise!
After a leisurely breakfast on the ship we packed our backpacks and walked down to deck 4 to disembark. All the crowds had left so it was a quick walk off, security check & grab a ticket for the shuttle bus into Wellington. The ride took just 10 minutes and dropped us in the centre of town.
We then walked to the cable car station and purchased tickets. Was a beautiful ride to the top where we discovered the Botanical Gardens, coffee house and gift stores. Lots of photo opportunities from the top, over Wellington & the harbour. After a bit of wandering we had a coffee & then took the cable car back down to Wellington town centre. When we arrived there were huge queues waiting to board. We were lucky that we did it as soon as we arrived so no wait for us.
Next a walk around Wellington. It has turned into a beautiful warm day around 23C which is perfect for me. Being Christmas Eve it is very busy and lots of beautiful decorations in the shops. We have free Internet so I will Poland this post shortly, with photos as I left the little device to transfer photos from camera to IPad back on the ship. Hopefully I will post again before we sail. I do have a couple of pics from last night I will add!
Hope everyone is enjoying Christmas Eve & not working too hard.
